In akoyaGO accounting, there are three standard dimensions for categorizing each transaction: Fund, Department, and Function.
Fund in Business Central
Fund represents the donor funds managed by the foundation; this is required for all transactions. For more information on Funds, please see Adding a New Fund in akoyaGO.
To view Funds through Dimensions in Business Central:
Click the Finance drop-down in the top options bar, then select Dimensions.
-OR-
Use the magnifying glass to search for Dimensions
Once in the Dimensions area:
- Click on FUND to highlight
- Click on the Dimension drop-down menu
- Select Dimension Values
After selecting the Dimension Values, you will see all available Funds in Business Central.
Departments and Functions
Department represents a group of funds, sometimes for an affiliate organization or a sub-entity of the foundation; this is required for all transactions. Every Fund is assigned a Department.
A function represents a unit within the foundation's operations, such as Fundraising, Program, and Operations. Function is optional; it is not required for all transactions. Default Functions can be set for Request Payments and Gift Payments in Accounting Settings. For more information, please see akoyaGO with Accounting - Accounting Settings

Error Message: Dimension Value Code
While working in Business Central (often while closing net assets), you may come across the following error message:
In this example, the dimension value is a Fund. The message states that fund #00537 cannot be found.
To find this “missing” Fund, navigate to the Dimensions area:
- Highlight FUND
- Click the Dimension drop-down
- Select Dimension Values

Search for the Fund Code (number) shown in the initial error message

If the “Blocked” box is checked, it indicates that the related record is blocked from posting to transactions. Example: a customer declared insolvent or an item placed in quarantine.
To continue work with this fund code (number), you will need to uncheck that box. Our recommendation is to reactivate all funds, complete all current activities (such as closing out a year), and then deactivate them again.
“Blocked” is Business Central terminology for inactive or deactivated (blocked from posting). Business Central is preventing you from posting to funds that should be closed.
Custom Dimensions in Business Central
Setting up a custom dimension in Business Central can be helpful when you need more detailed reporting without expanding your chart of accounts. Dimensions allow you to categorize transactions in different way so you can analyze and report on the same G/L account from multiple perspectives.
Important Considerations
Before creating a custom dimension, keep the following in mind:
- Custom dimensions are not supported in Net Asset Close, JIA, Fund Fees, or Spendable calculations.
- Custom dimensions are available only in Business Central and not in CRM.
- Dimensions 1, 2, and 3 should never be changed, as these are required, standard dimensions used by akoyaGO.
